Choosing Longer-Lasting Furniture

Buyers Guide / July 23,2013

It is important to consider different factors when purchasing a new sofa or lounge to last. These include frames, springs, size, fabrics, and general quality.

Frames

The best materials for frames include kiln-dried hardwood of high-quality, such as maple or oak. Frames should feel durable and heavy, and corner blocks should be screwed together, rather than stapled.

Springs

For the highest levels of comfort, choose hand-tied, eight-way, or S-shaped springs.

Fabrics

With an endless array of patterns, colours, and materials to choose from, deciding on a fabric can take some careful consideration. Heavyweight fabrics tend to be more durable, and tighter-woven fabrics tend to be more spill resistant. Microfibers and all-weather fabrics are durable and resistant to stains.

Size and Dimension

Measure the space before shopping for a lounge, and ensure that the height and width fits the overall theme or feel of the room. The size, shape, and dimension of the item should also conform to its intended purpose, whether that involves casual afternoon naps for one or seating the whole family every day.
