How To Pick The Perfect Sofa For Your Living Space

How To / March 19,2017

When it comes to choosing the right sofa, the possibilities can feel seemingly endless, but it doesn’t have to be hard if you take some time to do a bit of research and have the right information on hand. Read on below for tips to ensuring your sofa decision-making skills are on point before walking into the next showroom.

SIZE

Take the time to measure your room and work out how much space you’d like to keep vacant. The last thing you’ll want is a couch that takes over your entire living room, so make sure there’s enough room to walk around easily without having to reconfigure other furniture items that already have a home. Are you after a sofa or armchair that has footrests or reclines? Bare this in mind when trying to keep within measurement guidelines to avoid disappointment.

STYLE

What kind of look are you going for? A lounge suite can make or break a room so it’s important to factor this in. Does your home have a slightly coastal vibe or more of a country feel? Are you huddled into a tiny one-bedroom apartment or blessed with an open plan living space that allows you to spread out? Are you after a sleek and contemporary look or prefer more of a classic silhouette for your home? Unless you’re going for a mix-and-match look (which is totally fine, by the way!) you’ll want to consider these things so that your lounge can help to tie the room together.

SHAPE

If space is a non-issue, you might want to consider a sofa suite with two or three pieces so you can make better use of floor space whilst ensuring there’s enough room for the family to relax. If looking to fill a smaller or odd-shaped living room, furnish with a simple two or three seat sofa or go for one with a chaise lounge if you’d rather not skimp on comfort. Most of our leather lounges are modular and can be customised to include extra seating pieces so if you’re something unique in size, be sure to get in touch with us directly.

MATERIAL

As if there weren’t enough things to consider, material is obviously quite high up on the list of importance when choosing a lounge. Fabric sofas can be quite comfy and come in a range of colours and patterns, but if you’re after something a bit more luxurious, leather can really elevate a living space. Whilst both options can be relatively easy to keep clean (especially if you have removable covers on your fabric sofa) it’s important to consider other factors that might help in deciding which is best for you. How your lounge is upholstered and how it will be used is also very important, especially if you have younger children or pets around, and of course budget plays a big factor in the decision-making process, so be sure to factor these things in accordingly.

COLOUR

Here’s a chance for your personality to really shine through... by way of your couch! Neutral is always a good way to go if you prefer something that won’t get dated easily and will generally work with most styles and colour schemes, as far as your interior look goes. But if you’re looking to make a statement, it might be fun to add a burst of colour or pattern to your room and turn your lounge into the centrepiece you never thought you’d have. Keep in mind that lighter materials or leathers will need a bit more care and maintenance than other colours, so if this is something you wish to avoid, stick to a darker colour scheme.

PLACEMENT

The truth is, you’ll probably spend a good majority of your time indoors on this couch (apart from your bed) so it’s essential you’ve got it set up just the way you want it. Will you be vegging out in front of the TV for most of the time or is your living space used as a quiet little nook to catch up on some reading and relaxation? If TV takes precedence, you’ll want your sofa to have a front row seat to the telly, but if books are king then you might prefer a cosy spot by the window with some natural sunlight.
