Maria Britos Reflections Work - Lounge Life

Fun Stuff / June 22,2013

It was Maria Brito's former life as an attorney that prompted a re-location to New York City in 2000. It would be here that she would forge a love affair with the art world that has led to a successful career in the professional world of interior design, decoration and art collecting.

Brito landed her own book deal following her contribution of a piece to Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP newsletter in 2011. Her book, Out There, is a compilation of her early years in Venezuela and journeying through her favorite galleries and her love of entertaining. Every word and caption in her book is proudly her own and offers readers a realistic way to develop their own art collection no matter how much money they have available. Brito says that the biggest misconception about the world of art is that it is exclusive and relevant to just a small percentage of people. While she acknowledges that the art community is not particularly friendly, gallery owners and curators are generally happy to make new contacts to build a new generation of collectors. Although she has worked with many celebrities, Brito has especially fond recollections of working with Sean Combs in Miami. His lack of art knowledge saw him employ Brito's services and they have since visited several art fairs together. She notes that while he has a 'jet-setting' life, he remains humble and is a person that has not forgotten his ground roots in Harlem.
