Tips for Hanging a Mirror in Your Home

How To / October 11,2013

Adding a mirror to any room is a great way to give the illusion of more space. But before you put a nail in the wall, there are a few things you need to consider:

  • The height, shape and design of the mirror.
  • If you haven't already bought the mirror, first pick where you want to hang one so you can choose the right mirror to suit the space.
  • When hanging a mirror, it's always a good idea to place it approximately 5 feet above the floor.
  • When hanging a mirror over an item like a sofa, for example, it's important that you keep it at least 10% narrower than the item below it.
  • A bathroom mirror should fill the entire space above the vanity, while smaller mirrors are more suitable for entryways. Mirrored sets are great for creating wall features.
  • Consider how you hang the mirror: hanging a mirror vertically adds height to a space, while hanging a mirror horizontally will fill a wall.
