A sofa can be a great way to add instant colour to a living room when you want to balance the relaxation of neutral tones with a bolder statement for guests. Not all coloured sofas are as loud as you might fear. A mustard green, for example, is soothing yet sunny enough to lift spirits on a rainy day. It also goes well with gray. Deep wines, burgundies and clarets make a cold room more welcoming in winter. Turquoise and fuschia look peppy in summer, while mint green is fresh and duck-egg blue looks regal.
A good way to choose a sofa colour is to take a sample of your wall paint with you to the store. Obviously, some of us are nervous about outlaying money on a bright piece of large furniture. If that sounds like you, add colour with cushions. Even a footstool in a different shade to your sofa will add an energising contrast to the room.
