Derry mental health charity, Action Mental Health (AMH) New Horizons, is calling for old books so that a unique piece of furniture, a sofa, can be created. The finished artwork will be part of the 'What's Your Story?' City of Culture Project. Organisers of the initiative say that, before going on tour across the North, the sofa will be displayed in the city of Derry.
Service manager, Mickie Harkin, said: "We started thinking about how we could mark the City of Culture year in a socially inclusive way that would get as many people as involved as possible." It is intended that the sofa created will symbolise the value of books to the city. As many books as possible are sought to complete the project and it is hoped that people will embrace and support the expression of the profound effect of literature on people's lives. Those most closely involved with the creation of the artwork will be the service users of AMH and also schools and the public in Derry. The project is funded through the Lottery's Culture for All Programme.
