Using Dark Blue in Interior Spaces

How To / June 29,2013

Dark blue is currently so popular in interior design circles that some are touting it as 'the new black', according Sydney Morning Herald's Life & Style magazine. Award winning interior designer Greg Natale is such a fan of the colour that he's featured it in six entries chosen as finalists for the residential decoration award in the 2013 Australian Interior Design Awards. Natale uses grey, chocolate brown, dark brick, and black with his blue interiors, breaking up blocks of colour with patterns, whites, gold, silver, corals, oranges, or pinks. For a bold look, he has suggested trimming blocks of blue with lighter colours such as white along the skirting on a blue wall.

Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour and communications manager at Dulux, believes the popularity of the colour blue for home interiors is due to it's associations with relaxation, tranquility, and contentment. According to Lucena-Orr, blues make excellent dominant backdrops and can be complement by just about any design or pattern. She has suggested layering dark blues with warmer blues such as azure, and ombreing or grading colours for greater impact and appeal. Experiment with accent colours such as green, beige, oranges, and browns, which also go well with blue, she adds.
