The Quest for the Right Sofa

Buyers Guide / September 21,2013

Buying a sofa can be a slightly daunting task. Here are some tips to help you end up with the right sofa for you:

  • Know your budget.
  • Decide what style you want - A rolled-arm sofa will look traditional, while a square-armed style will pull your room into modern focus.
  • Measure the space - And don't just measure the length, but also the depth. Leaving space between the sofa and the coffee table or rug in front of it is important. You also want the depth to leave you the right distance from the television.
  • Check what the cushions are made from - Down is a popular choice for sofa-backs because it is soft and giving. Foam is sturdier and holds its shape better, making it a good material for seat cushions.
  • Lastly, decide on the colour and fabric - Your sofa needs to last years. Your fabric and colour need to fit with other items you own now, and they need to stay current as fashions change around them. Neutrals are a safe bet. That need not mean beige, chocolate, tobacco and grey are also smart neutral choices.
