Tips for Purchasing a Great Sofa

Buyers Guide / June 4,2013

Furniture shopping can be more successful, and more fun, when the shopper knows what to look for. The choice of a sofa is often a major and significant decision. It is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of leather and fabric sofas and its potential to last in the long term.

Leather sofas deliver a sophisticated, rich look and natural texture. Although fabric sofas are a warmer choice, the grade and finish of the leather selected will determine how cool it feels to the touch. The style of the cushion is another factor that should be considered when buying a sofa. Sofa cushions generally come in knife edge, boxed, attached or detached styles. Sock, pleated or track are the most common arm styles available. The foot or leg style of the sofa also needs consideration. Wedge, tapered, bun foot and skirted or no skirt are the options available. Track arm, wedge or tapered leg and boxed cushion style sofas offer the most modern style, as they provide sleek and clean lines. In contrast, sock or rolled arms coupled with knife-edge back cushions and a bun foot or skirt creates a more traditional impression. Naturally, all of the decisions made depend on the style of sofa the buyer seeks and the wear and tear to which the furniture will be subjected.
