A Touch of Tuscany in Your Living Room

How To / September 20,2013

Tuscany is known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and at the moment we?re loving the sun-kissed look that it brings. Here are some ways to bring the glory of Tuscany into your living room:

  • A stone or stone-look fireplace, offset by a fireguard of ornate wrought-iron scrollwork, warms both the hands and the heart as a centrepiece.
  • A rich use of heavy timber furniture is a must. Your budget may not stretch to lining the walls with aged bookcases, but a signature timber coffee table with carved lion's-paw feet will set the mood.
  • A sunburst frame around a mirror above the mantelpiece evokes the Renaissance.
  • Ceilings should be part of your Tuscan haven, too. No generic ceiling-white here. Expose your timber beams or even add dummy ones, and paint the inserts the same colour as the walls.
  • Over-stuffed sofas and arm-chairs are essential. Upholster them in golds, roses and greens in Italian floral patterns. Add texture with lots of tapestry cushions with lavish fringing.
  • If you have an adjoining covered deck or patio, extend your theme outside.

What pulls your Tuscan look together is rich, soft, glowing golden tones. Think ochre first and foremost, accented with deep chocolates, russets and creams. Earth tones are the essence of Tuscany.
