Stain Removing Tips For Sofas

Care and Cleaning / October 28,2013

It doesn't matter how diligent you are with keeping your sofa clean, accidents are bound to happen. Thankfully, a spill doesn't have to ruin the look of your lounge. Some of the most common causes of stains include: pen ink, red wine, juices, grease from food and pet urine.

When you have a stain you want to remove, the first thing you should do is check the tag and see if the fabric is machine washable. If it is, you can remove the covers and give it a gentle wash. Never ever use bleach and, when cleaning, test the product first on an inconspicuous part of the couch before treating the stain. Here are a few tips for getting rid of some of the most common stains:

Pen ink

Never rub it. Gently use rubbing alcohol or vinegar and dish washing soap.

Red wine

Clean up excess wine and then pour a small amount of sparkling water on the stain and keep blotting.

Juice

Use one tablespoon of white vinegar with 2/3 cups of rubbing alcohol and blot the stain.

Grease from food

Baby wipes are a great option for this one. Alternatively you can use bicarbonate or corn starch.

Pet urine

Use vinegar and water in a spray bottle to get the mark and smell out of your sofa. Then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the area to absorb excess fluid and take away the smell.
