Live Like a Lord in the Yorkshire Dales

Fun Stuff / June 28,2013

The Yorkshire Dales is home to the 20,000 acre estate on which the former home of the Baron of Masham, Mark Cunliffe-Lister, sits. The once stately home became a luxurious castle-hotel in 2001 and was transformed by Mark and his wife Felicity. Great care was taken to preserve the historic building, the interior of which was built in the 1600s, features impressive high ceilings and rooms with a Victorian or Georgian theme. Throughout the spectacularly renovated building, paintings of earls provide evidence of the aristocratic history of the estate.

As well as paintings, a range of other fascinating artefacts are on display. A birthday telegram received by Viscount Swinton (a Minister at the time of World War 2) from Winston and Clemmie Churchill and a note of gratitude from Neville Chamberlain who stayed at the estate in 1939 are just two examples. The Drawing Room is decorated in true Georgian style. In this room, pale green meshes and gold details can be seen all over the walls, together with intricate furniture reminiscent of the 18th Century, a grand piano and an open fire. Guest rooms at the now-hotel are typically elegant with Victorian fireplaces, leather sofas and large picture windows. Outside the rooms is an aviary housing hawks, falcons and owls. Pheasants are often seen on the property. Guests also enjoy a Victorian style dining room featuring ornate gold leaves on the ceiling and panormaic view of the gardens and lake.
